Synopsis[]
Tensions run high on board the ships of the Japanese Self-Defense Force's First Escort Fleet, most in particular between the Fleet Commander, and two high-handed operatives sent by Saseba, an arm of the Japanese government meant to oppose the out-of-control Chief Kakuzawa. Showing a callous, and at times psychotic disregard for the Fleet and its crew, the CO eventually learns that they are transporting a highly experimental Vector Attack Craft, a cybernetic tank made from the Diclonius neural matter, and supposedly capable of facing down even Lucy. As they lose some ships and crew, the CO found himself under restraint and removed from authority. On the island itself, making a last-ditch effort stand against the rampaging Clone Diclonii, the Agent sacrifices herself to send Arakawa, who still holds information on the lost vaccine in her head, to supposed safety. This rescue is proven to be elusive, though, as the clones are already upon the landing craft the Agent used to infiltrate the island. The arrival of the Vector Craft, which sense other Diclonii's movements, saves Arakawa. A sudden concentration on the readout causes her to realize that her vaccine and research may still be intact, while a lecture from the lead operative forces her to realize how many people her work for Kakuzawa will end up hurting. Arakawa recovers the vaccine, but a possible opportunity for the craft to test itself against Lucy must be foregone to avoid the final sinking of the island. A nod from the escaping Lucy tells Arakawa that the Chief is dead, and despite the horrors she endured, Arakawa briefly tears up at the news as the island sinks forever, and with it, thousands of years of grudges.
