Confronting The Past is the sixteenth story arc in the Elfen Lied manga series. It encompasses events from Chapters ninety-eight through one-hundred-one.

Synopsis[]

In a replay of the series' start, Lucy arrives naked on the beach near Kamakura and is found by Kouta. But Kouta is the one bleeding, and both have their full memories of the past, a past for which Kouta now demands an accounting. Lucy is pressed to explain about her different and conflicting personalities, and about how a seeming betrayal by Kouta led to the murder of his family, and how she has lived solely to apologize to him, even if he can never forgive her. Sadly, Kouta confirms that he can never forgive what happened to his family, and also rejects her talk of a murderous DNA voice, declaring it an excuse. Nonetheless, he still offers her a chance to stay with them so Nyu can also stay, provided she ceases using her powers to kill. A confrontation with Kurama not only makes this impossible but shows her that the DNA Voice is, in fact, capable of stepping up and controlling her. Despite his vow to hate her for this, she rejects the DNA Voice yet again, only to lose all control when Kouta, despite his harsh words, blocks Kurama's attempt to shoot her with his body. It appears Kouta will soon die, and Lucy is prepared to make sure that the world does not long survive him.
